Appreciation of the poem and Figure of speech

 

Write an appreciation of the poem considering the following points.

Answer:

 1. About the poem/ poet / title:

The poem gives detailed information about the farmer and his around the clock hard

work.  The Sower is poem by victor Hugo which is written in French and later on translated into English by Toru Dutt. The poem manages to give universal image of farmers .

2. Theme :

       The poem describes a dedicated farmer who is striving hard tirelessly with huge expectations of having a good harvest. The farmer shows true perception in his assessment of scattering the precious grains in the farm . He has been many bad harvests in his life , still he is hopeful and optimistic about his success. He is looking forward to see good harvest in coming days .

3. Poetic devices , language , style :

       The poet used rich language for the poem. The poet has used various figure of speech in the

 This is an allegorical poem in which the Sower -- character , representing the qualities like

dedication , perseverance.

We must look forward with optimism one should have a powerful enough mind , positive

attitude , strong determination and spirit.

 6. Your opinion about the poem :

It’s a highly impressive poem making me feel admiration for hard work . I learn to dedicate

myself to my work in order to achieve success. We must remember that failures are the pillars of

success . Failures must not make me intolerant


Figure of speech


1.    Personification :

Sunlight , I see dying fast.  Expl : Human quality of dying is given to sunlight.

2 . Shadows run across the lands .  Expl : Human quality of running is given to the shadows. 3 . Black and high , his silhouette. Dominate the furrows deep ! 

Expl : Dominating someone is human quality , given to the silhouette.

4 : Twilight hastens on to the rule.

Expl : Hastens is human quality. It is given to the non – human object Twilight.

 

 2. Alliteration :  

1. Seems to touch the starry skies. Expl : The sound of letter ‘s' is repeated.

2 . Sunlight I see dying fast.  Expl : The sound of letter ‘s' is repeated.

3 . From his hand the precious grain. Expl : The sound of letter ‘h' is repeated .

 

 

3 . Inversion :

1.       Now to sow the task is set.

 Expl : Word order is not incorrect prose order. The correct prose order is - The task is   

      set to sow now.

2 . Marches he along the plain.  Expl : Correct prose order is - He marches along the plain.

 

4   . Hyperbole :

 His height seems to touch the starry skies.

 Expl : Starry skies never be touched by height of the person.

 

 5. Antithesis :

Darkness deepens. Fades the light.

 Expl : Darkness and light are opposite words. Opposite idea is expressed.

 

6. Apostrophe :

Dominates the furrows deep !

Expl : Use of apostrophe for conveying the intensity of action.
