 2.5 Nose Versus Eyes 

1:- Read the extract and write as per the instructions 

Extract:- {Between Nose and Eyes-------- like a saddle (Page No.88)}

 Write an appreciation of the poem considering the following points:- 

1) Theme of the poem  

2) Language used in the poem 

3) Special Features 

4) Message of the poem  


Answer:- 

1) Theme of the poem:- 

 It is a funny poem and a satire on the human behaviour as well as the proceedings of the court.  

2) Poetic devices used in the poem:-  

The poem has rhyming words. The major figures of speech used here include- 

Personification, Alliteration and inversion. The sensory organs are personified and have given the human qualities. 

3) Special Features:-  

The poem is a gentle criticism of the judicial system. 

4) Message of the poem:-  

In many occasions the claim of possession is made by those who don't deserve it at all and the deserving one is deprived of what is his.

Write an appreciation of the poem considering the following points:-

4) Your opinion about the poem 

 Answer:- 

1) Title and the poet:- 

 William Copper was one of the most popular 18" century English poets and his poems deal with Nature and everyday life. The title contains the sensory organs and llowing points:- they symbolize human behaviour. 

2) Theme of the extract of the poem:-  

The court room drama is a satire on the judiciary system. It also mocks at the stone blind justice in a humorous manner emphasizing upon the lack of empathy and common sense.  3) Poetic style:- 

 The poem is in stanza of four lines each. The first line rhymes with the third while the second line rhymes with the fourth. The rhyme scheme of the stanza is:- abab  

4) My opinion about the poem:-  

It's funny poem. It makes me laugh. It is a satire an the courtroom drama. I like it very much. I enjoyed it. 

 

  Figures of speech  

A) Personification 

1) So Tongue was the lawyer, and argued the cause.  

Answer:- The 'tongue' has given the human quality of 'arguing.  

2) While Chief Baron Ear sat to balance the laws 

 Answer:- The ear is personified as a judge.  

3) So famed for his talent in nicely discerning judgement.  

Answer:- The ear has given the male pronoun 'his' and given the human quality of being discerning.  

5) shifting his side, as a lawyer knows how 

Answer:- The 'tongue (lawyer) has personified and given the male pronoun his'. 5) He pleaded again in behalf of the Eyes. Answer: The 'tongue (lawyer) has personified and given the human quality of pleading. 

B) Alliteration  

1) The spectacles set them unhappily wrong. 

Answer:- The sound of letter 's' is repeated. 

2) To which the said spectacles ought to belong. 

Answer:- The sound of letter 's' repeated. 

3) With great deal of skill, and a wig full of learning. 

 Answer:- The sound of letter 'w' is repeated.  

4) So famed for his talent in nicely discerning judgement.  

Answer:- The sound of letter f is repeated.  

5) Designed to sit close to it, just like a saddle. 

 Answer:- The sound of letter 's' is repeated.  

  6)Pray who would, or who could, wear spectacles then? 

 Answer:- The sound of letter 'w' is repeated.  

  7)With a reasoning the court will never condemn.  

Answer:- Answer:- The sound of letter 'w' is repeated.  

C) Simile  

1) They are made with a straddle as wide as the ridge of the nose.  

Answer:- The straddle of the spectacles are directly compared with the ridge of the rose.  

D) Tautology  

1) On the whole it appears, and my argument shows.  

Answer:- The word 'appears' and 'shows' have the same meaning.
